Microaggressions: What they are and how to address them in real time.

Many people in our communities and workplaces experience verbal, physical, and environmental slights every day based upon their gender identity, race, sexual orientation, age, class, or other factors. While sometimes unintentional and often unnoticed by others, these experiences can make employees, clients, and participants feel singled out and unwelcome. Recognizing microaggressions early and responding effectively in the moment helps build a more open, collaborative, and productive environment and prevents escalation into actionable workplace harassment issues. In this interactive session we will explore common microaggressions, brainstorm and practice a range of effective intervention strategies, learn how to stay present and calm in challenging interactions, and discuss how to respond when we are the person who causes the harm.

Learning Objectives:

1. Gain awareness of how a different types of microaggressions are experienced in the workplace

2. Brainstorm and practice tools for effective intervention in-person and online.

3. Gain tools for managing adrenaline in stressful interactions.

4. Reflect on ways to respond when we are the cause of harm to another.
